Art and Liberalism

Artists need a certain amount of freedom to develop their creativity. Some people think that artists should have total freedom to express any thoughts and ideas.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Art is an infinite world. Artists use art to express themselves. Art as a form of expression with limitless capacity can give anyone a multifaceted freedom that can complement or subjugate an entity. It can make you explore or seclude. It can create or destroy. It can ignite a spark or subdue a fire. It can lead your path or put others astray.

Art like knowledge bears a power that can influence other’s thinking. For some it is a legacy of idea that stays beyond the life of the creator themselves. For others it is an immediate interaction that is waiting for a response or an action that will continue the narrative that the artist had passed.

Bearing these much effect on people entails a responsibility that appeals to humanity. An artist can be selfish. His art is his. He uses it to pour his emotions and intellect. He can ignore the norms. He is unique. He wants to be heard and seen. He wants you to know what he knows. He wants to influence. Influence is power. Introducing your work means having the power to educate and persuade people. As you do a reflection of self-limiting based on your values and emotions, try to include learning the limits of your “would be audience”.

Spiderman said, “With great power comes great responsibility”. An artist should always remember that his talent is a gift, and such gift should be used for the greater good of many people. He is not liable to whatever action others might have after he showed his work, but his intention should always be weighed and should always be good. Need not to be the best, just good as the least. Be a little selfless. Know your audience. Liberal arts should have appropriateness… of age, of place, of culture, of medium and of content. Know that there are people who can understand you and people who don’t. Know your people.

As an artist, you should keep your pride that no matter what interpretation others might think about your work, you are an artist and you are a man of Sense and Sensibility.
